Lesson Plan Procedures and Tips

Although you can simply start this lesson up and teach it without much prep, here's a sample lesson plan you can use to have a blast in your class using just this lesson software.  To add more to your lesson tho, I recommend downloading the provided flashcards and adding some flashcard games to the class.  It's not necessary but it helps add even more fun to your class by getting students moving around more.

New Content Teaching

1. Lesson Introduction and Pre-Teaching

Start the lesson by using the new words section of the lesson software.  You can reveal the family words one by one to your students or have them choose a picture to reveal in a more discovery based learning process.

When a family picture has been revealed, press it to focus on that picture.  Teach students the new word and navigate back to the new word screen.  If possible, use TPR to help students reinforce the words.  When returning to the new words introduction page, allow students to say all of the family words that they have learned so far.  After all 8 words have been learned, go to the Listen and Touch activity.

2. Family Listen and Touch (Practice Activity)

In this reinforcement activity, you say a family word and a student should touch that picture on the board.  When they touch it, they should say the family word.  Do this several times at a pace your students can handle.

3. Blast Off (Practice Activity)

Blast Off can be found in the Practice section of the software.

In Blast Off, touch a family picture and it will start flashing.  Say a yes or a no sentence or question about the family member that your students would understand.  If the answer the question is YES, they jump.  If it is NO, they sit down.

Here are some example sentences & questions you might use (depending on student level):

  • Is she the mom?  |  Is she Mom?

  • She is the mom.  |  She is Mom.

  • He is a boy.  |  He is a girl.

  • He is tall.  |   He is short.

  • I have a brother.  (In this case, students that have a brother can stand and the ones that don't can sit).

To make the activity even more fun, you can rapidly ask questions and students can jump and sit pretty fast.

4. Even More Practice! (Optional)

At this point, you have a lot of different practice activities to choose from.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Color Family Hair (practice):  If your students have already learned the colors from the color lesson (on this page here) you can use this activity.  Say an family member and a color and have students color that family members hair

  • Likes (practice): Use this activity if you have taught the animals lesson.  Start by saying a family member and then say what animal he or she likes.  Example: Brother likes dogs and doesn't like birds.  Students should change the pictures displayed accordingly.  They can talk about the pictures then to the best of their ability.

  • Match All (practice): Use this if you've taught colors.  Say a family member and what color that family member likes.  Students should drag the family member's picture to the spot under the color.  Do this for all of the family members.

  • Flashcard Games: This can also a great time to play some flashcard games.

5. Lesson Presentation

The lesson presentation centers on a young boy showing his family album to the class.  He uses it to introduce various members of his family.

Some tips about lesson presentation:

  • Talk about the pictures first.  "What do you see?" "Who is he/she?"   Guide students to talk about the pictures and use whatever related content you've learned in the past to talk about these family member in the picture.

  • If your students can read,  guide your students together using your finger.

  • If students can't read, instruct them to listen as you do so.  They can repeat after you.  Do this a few times.

  • After reading, ask a follow up question such as "Who is this?" "Is she the mom?" "Do you have baby sister?"

  • Repeat the above steps for all pages until you reach the final page.

  • Final Page: Teach students how to say they love their various family members.  Use TPR to help reinforce the meaning when students are talking

7. Wind Down and Review

Depending on the time left, it's time to wind down the lesson, review, and award points/rewards/etc.  Here are a couple options you have:

  • Flashcard review: Hold up flashcards and have students shout the names.  Encourage students to say "I love my mom" or "I have a mom".

  • Use the Review section of the software.  Touch a picture and talk about it using the same questions.

Final Thoughts

There you have it!  A fun and interesting family ESL lesson plan.  If you've followed this plan, you should still have plenty of content left for an additional lesson using this lesson software.

If you have time to prepare a full lesson plan ahead of time, here are some final thoughts to make a fantastic lesson.

  • Download some family based worksheets from a website like www.eslprintables.com.

  • Add a Family craft or other hands on activities.  I usually like to make family trees with my students in elementary school.

  • And for some great flashcard games and other active games, check out Muxi's English Games YT channel here.
